Thursday Thoughts – January 21, 2016

Dear Friends,

Please don't forget our Stewardship Campaign!

Thank you to all of you who returned your stewardship pledges of your time, talent and treasure.  For those of you who haven’t yet responded, we would appreciate receiving it as soon as possible.  Apparently only about 50% of you have responded.  Your commitment of your time, treasure and talents will help us formulate the 2016 budget with more accuracy. This is an important part of our life as a community of faith.  It’s often not easy to talk about the stewardship of our time, talents and treasure, but it’s essential to how we function as a congregation - in our day-to-day life as a parish community and in the greater Cedar Valley.  Thank you.

!!! Calling all persons responsible for submitting reports for the Annual Meeting – they were due LAST SUNDAY – in an electronic form if at all possible.  PLEASE get them in ASAP – we cannot print the booklet for the meeting until all the reports are in - PLEASE!!

It’s that time of year - 2016

Our Annual Meeting is this Sunday, January 24 – and there will only be one service that day – 10am – followed by our Annual Meeting and Potluck Lunch.  Our snow date is January 31st.  We look forward to your joining us on the 24th.  For the children after the service (and during our annual meeting they will be watching a video – Inside/Out – in the preschool area, with popcorn and juice.

A Huge THANK YOU . . .

. . . to Craig Ham.  He single-handedly restored (repaired and repainted) to figures from our Crèche set!  And they are amazingly beautiful.  You may have noticed that our precious little donkey had no face at all – but now his gentle face has been restored.  Thank you, Craig, from all of us, and especially the little ones who carry the figures forward on Christmas Eve.

We’ve been gifted from Elders Inc. a check in the amount of $5000 to be restricted to special needs in our church community and beyond.  When our Vestry met on Tuesday night, they voted to give $2500 to the St. Francis Catholic Worker House for their campaign to raise $42,000 to purchase another home to accommodate men in need of shelter.

Our next date to serve supper at the Catholic Worker House is Monday, February 15. A sign-up chart will be available on the kiosk two weeks before our date.  We also set two more dates set as well – Monday, March 7; and Monday, April 11.

The Altar Flowers Calendar for 2016 has been revised

Please see the new Altar Flowers Calendar on the kiosk.  The permanent listings are there, and some new spaces are open – the open dates are highlighted in blue.  Please consider giving flowers in memory of loved ones, to honor a person or an occasion or in thanksgiving for loved ones.  If you have a special date in mind, it is OK to have more than one giver on a Sunday.  Thank you.

Don’t forget to save . . . . While you are saving your HyVee till slips and your medicine bottles, don’t forget you can also save pop tops from beverages and the larger pull tops for some canned foods.  These benefit the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House.  There is a container for them at the east entrance to the Church.  Thank you.

Looking ahead

  • Next date to work at the Food Bank is this Saturday, January 16, and the time is 9-11am.

  • Next Vestry meeting is Tuesday, February 16th at 7pm in the Church Hall.

  • St. Margaret’s meets for their book study Thursday, February 18th in the Library.  Bring a sack lunch.

  • Our next Food Bank Work Day is Saturday, February 13th from 9-11am.

Closing Thoughts . . .

We continue to pray for our sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Nzara, and especially for Bishop Samuel as he continues to head up the justice, peace and reconciliation work for the entire province, comprised of the two nations of The Sudan and South Sudan.  He needs our special prayers.

“Common*Unity,” an interfaith prayer service celebrating our community, will be held on Sunday, January 31 at 4 p.m. at Masjid al-Noor Islamic Center, 2110 Sager Ave, Waterloo.  The service will be led by members of the Cedar Valley Interfaith Council.  Persons of all faiths are invited.

May all of us journey into the New Year with hearts filled with joy and hope and looking forward to what 2016 has in store for us.  May it be so. Amen.

In the peace and hope of Christ,
