Frantic Friday Thoughts – February 5, 2016

Dear Friends,

Please don't forget our Stewardship Campaign!

Thank you to all of you who returned your stewardship pledges of your time, talent and treasure.  For those of you who haven’t yet responded, we would appreciate receiving it as soon as possible.  Your commitment of your time, treasure and talents will help us formulate the 2016 budget with more accuracy. This is an important part of our life as a community of faith.  It’s often not easy to talk about the stewardship of our time, talents and treasure, but it’s essential to how we function as a congregation - in our day-to-day life as a parish community and in the greater Cedar Valley.  Thank you.

Our next date to serve supper at the Catholic Worker House is Monday, February 15. A sign-up chart will be available on the kiosk two weeks before our date.  We also set two more dates set as well – Monday, March 7; and Monday, April 11.

The Altar Flowers Calendar for 2016 has been revised -

Please see the new Altar Flowers Calendar on the kiosk.  The permanent listings are there, and some new spaces are open – the open dates are highlighted in blue.  Please consider giving flowers in memory of loved ones, to honor a person or an occasion or in thanksgiving for loved ones.  If you have a special date in mind, it is OK to have more than one giver on a Sunday.  Thank you.

Don’t forget to save . . . . While you are saving your HyVee till slips and your medicine bottles, don’t forget you can also save pop tops from beverages and the larger pull tops for some canned foods.  These benefit the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House.  There is a container for them at the east entrance to the Church.  Thank you.

Coming up very soon!

Tuesday, February 9th is our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.  This year we are inviting the families of our preschool to join us, and we have a little activity for the children too.  Our supper starts at 5pm and concludes at 6pm.  If you would like to help, either cooking pancakes or donating ingredients, please see the sign-up sheet on the kiosk.  Many thanks!

And if February 9th is Shrove Tuesday, February 10th is Ash Wednesday.  As we begin our Lenten journey, we will have celebrations of the Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes at both services – noon and 6pm.

Lenten Program – Becoming Caring Gardeners in God’s Creation

This is one of the themes which came out of General Convention last year.  We will begin with a soup supper at 6pm, with the program to start at 6:30pm.  There is a sign up sheet on the kiosk for those who would like to make a pot of soup or a salad or supply a loaf of French or Italian bread and margarine.

There will be no meal on Ash Wednesday – the soup suppers will begin on Wednesday, February 17.

The program will be as follows -

  • Wednesday, February 17 – An overview of our Communion’s commitment to addressing Climate Change and what we might do.

  • Wednesday, February 24 – A Conversation with Master Gardeners about our landscaping plan – getting real with responsible gardening.

  • Wednesdays, March 2, 9 and 16 – An overview of Pope Francis’s Encyclical - Laudato Si – On Care for Our Common Home.  This will be led by the Rev. Maureen Doherty.  This will include a discussion of what an encyclical is; why this one reaches out to the global family; and what it challenges us to do.

There will be activities for our children and the evening will conclude with Compline.  Only the February 24 session might be a bit longer for those who want to be a part of our landscaping plans.

Got a ‘green thumb’?  Love to garden?  This notice is for YOU:

Dot Teague has put a good deal of effort in getting Trinity Parish linked up with local Master Gardeners as possible partners in the landscaping of the ‘west’ and ‘north’ side of our building.  Our first meeting with local Master Gardeners is Wednesday, February 24, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Trinity.  You will note that falls in the time for our Lenten program and it fits right into our Lenten theme – Becoming Caring Gardeners in God’s Creation.  The purpose of the Feb. 24th evening is to develop a team of Trinity members who will move this project forward and be committed to seeing it through.  This meeting will design a collaborative plan and discuss what trees, shrubs, etc will go into our future garden.  Planting has been designated to begin in June.  Part of Trinity’s commitment before June is to have the area to be planted cleared of shrub and tree roots and tilled.  There will be a sign-up sheet on the kiosk for those wanting to commit to this project and to attend on the 24th.  Please contact Dot Teague (296-7202) if you have questions.

Looking ahead

  • Our next Food Bank Work Day is Saturday, February 13th from 9-11am.

  • Next Vestry meeting is Tuesday, February 16th at 7pm in the Church Hall.

  • St. Margaret’s meets for their book study Thursday, February 18th in the Library.  Bring a sack lunch.

Closing Thoughts . . .

We continue to pray for our sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Nzara, and especially for Bishop Samuel as he continues to head up the justice, peace and reconciliation work for the entire province, comprised of the two nations of The Sudan and South Sudan.  He needs our special prayers.  The situation in parts of South Sudan continues to deteriorate.  We pray for all our sisters and brothers who call South Sudan their home.

I want to thank those of you from Trinity who were able to attend the inter-faith service - “Common*Unity” – last Sunday at the Masjid al-Noor Islamic Center. Those of us who planned the service felt like it was a good beginning and we hope to build on that foundation with other opportunities to join together and serve our Cedar Valley community.

As Lent approaches, I hope that in addition to what we may try to ‘give up’ we might also consider what we might ‘take on’ for our Lenten journey.

In the peace and hope of Christ,
